US Resumes Student Visa Interviews in India: Relief for Over 1 Lakh Aspirants Ahead of Fall 2025

After more than a month of uncertainty and mounting anxiety, the United States has resumed scheduling student visa interviews in India just in time for the Fall 2025 college intake. This move comes as a major relief to the thousands of Indian students who had been left in limbo following a sudden suspension of visa appointments at the end of May.

A US embassy spokesperson confirmed,

“Posts across mission India have resumed scheduling F, M, and J (student and exchange) nonimmigrant visa applications. Applicants should check the embassy or consulate websites for appointment availability.”

Why Was There a Freeze?

The pause in visa appointments was triggered by new, stricter rules around social media scrutiny for applicants. As of late June, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J visa must now set their social media accounts to public and provide usernames or handles for every platform used in the last five years on the DS-160 visa application form.

“Omitting social media information could lead to visa denial and ineligibility for future visas,” the embassy warned.

A Backlog and a Race for Slots

The timing of the freeze could not have been worse. Each year, Indian students rush to secure visa slots in June and July, just before the academic year begins in the US. The temporary halt intensified demand, creating a significant backlog.

The resumption of interview scheduling has brought a wave of optimism among students and parents, many of whom had been worried about missing out on their academic dreams.

India’s Growing Presence in US Classrooms

India continues to be the top source of international students in the US. Last year, nearly 4.2 lakh Indian students were enrolled in American institutions, representing an 11.8% increase over 2023.
This growing presence underscores the importance of smooth visa processing for both countries’ educational and economic ties.

What Students Need to Know

  • Check for Appointment Availability: Slots are limited and in high demand, so applicants should regularly check the US embassy and consulate websites for updates.
  • Prepare for Enhanced Screening: Ensure all social media information is accurate and public, as required by the new rules.
  • Be Thorough with Documentation: Any errors or omissions can lead to delays or denials.
  • Stay Informed: The US State Department has reiterated that visa screening continues even after issuance, with the possibility of revocation for violations.

Looking Ahead

While the resumption of student visa interviews is a positive step, the process remains highly competitive and subject to evolving rules. Indian students are advised to stay proactive, prepared, and patient as they navigate the final steps toward studying in the US this fall.

“US visa screening does not stop after a visa is issued. We continuously check visa holders to ensure they follow all US laws and immigration rules. And we will revoke their visas and deport them if they don’t,” the US State Department emphasized.

For now, the doors are open again—and the race for a US education is back on.
