Duke University launches 10-month Master in Business, Climate, and Sustainability (MBCS) to address rising demand for Green Skills

Duke University has launched a pioneering 10-month Master in Business, Climate, and Sustainability (MBCS), created jointly by the Fuqua School of Business and the Nicholas School of the Environment, to meet Wall Street’s rising demand for green skills and climate-literate business professionals.

Program Overview

The new MBCS degree aims to fill the growing gap in talent able to connect business logic with climate and sustainability science—skills increasingly sought after by employers striving to meet ambitious climate targets. Unlike other sustainability MBA options, the MBCS is a fully integrated, in-person program intentionally built from the ground up to combine core business education with deep climate and sustainability expertise, all within a compact 10-month format.

Unique Features

• The curriculum equally emphasizes finance, analytics, operations, leadership, climate science, energy, policy, carbon accounting, and modelling skills.
• Courses are co-developed by both Fuqua and Nicholas faculty, blending business and environmental perspectives throughout.
• Students participate in a two-term practicum with corporate partners, getting exposure to real-world sustainability challenges from both technical and managerial standpoints.
• The program structure encourages collaboration through small cohorts and offers extensive career support via Duke’s alumni networks and events.

Market Demand and Career Outcomes

Employers are under increasing pressure to meet decarbonization and climate adaptation goals, but only a minority have achieved meaningful emissions reduction so far, in part because there aren’t enough professionals with the right expertise. MBCS graduates are being prepared for analyst and early-career positions in ESG reporting, sustainability strategy, risk assessment, compliance, supply chain sustainability, and climate-focused innovation roles across various industries, including finance, consulting, energy, tech, and consumer goods.

Innovation Edge

A highlight of the MBCS is the emphasis on climate-tech entrepreneurship, with students encouraged to innovate both as founders and as agents of change within larger organizations. Dedicated coursework and mentorship aim to launch graduates into the climate innovation ecosystem, working on carbon markets, clean energy, or sustainable products.

This new offering from Duke positions its graduates at the forefront of business and climate, ready to drive sustainability transformation for employers across multiple sectors.
